Martin Welzel’s performances have included St. Pauls Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, Notre-Dame and St. Sulpice in Paris and Washington National Cathedral (USA). He has been featured as soloist at international festivals held in Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal and South Africa and was acting professor of organ at the Musikhochschule in Saarbrücken. From 2021–2022, he was associate organist at Munich Cathedral. In 2023, he was appointed as principal organist at the Stadtkirche St. Nikolaus in Wil (Switzerland) and as artistic director of the concert series, “toccatawil,” and serves as instructor of organ at the Diözesane Kirchenmusikschule St. Gallen.
Born in 1972 in Vechta (Germany), he received his first musical training in Bremen. He studied organ with Daniel Roth and Wolfgang Rübsam in Saarbrücken, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and an artist diploma in sacred music and organ. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ from the University of Washington in Seattle (USA), where he studied with Dr. Carole Terry and wrote a dissertation on Jeanne Demessieux. In addition, he was the recipient of a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. He has recorded three CDs for Naxos with organ music by Max Reger at Trier Cathedral. (www.martinwelzel.com).
